Taylor Swift is a cultural phenomenon and one of the most successful artists of her generation. In this short online course we reflect on the philosophical value of Taylor's music, lyrics and life as a celebrity. Open to anyone who wants to know more and think deeply about Taylor's work and influence, the course does not require a background in philosophy to participate. Being a Swiftie is encouraged! The course brings together the academic rigor of an introduction to philosophy, with the excitement and fun of being a Taylor Swift fan. Program in short: - Online sessions: on Monday evenings from 19.00-21.30 CET - Dates: 2, 9, 16, 23 September 2024 - Language: English Two options: - Standard participation 3 sessions of 2,5 hours + 1 session of 2 hours, including a quiz, and a philosophical reflection (with certificate of achievement) - Auditing participation 3 sessions of 2,5 hours (with certificate of attendance) Cost: Standard 99,13 euro, Auditing 69,13 euro The course is taught by Dr. Catherine Robb. Catherine is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Tilburg University. Her main research interests are in ethics and metaphysics, particularly the nature and value of talents, abilities and skills, and the implications this has for well-being, morality and equality. She also has an active research interest in phenomenology, philosophy of music, and applied ethics (particularly the ethics of fame and celebrity). Very eager to bring philosophy closer to popular culture, Catherine is currently working on a project entitled ‘Taylor Swift and Philosophy,’ and is interested in philosophical questions about watching reality television.
